The environmental impact of wound care is significant – hydrocolloid dressings alone produce almost 30 million kilograms of waste annually. Traditional hydrocolloid dressings are made using synthetic plastic components that take an estimated 400 years to biodegrade. Recycling wound care materials is also not possible due to the risk of infection and material properties, which is why the products are disposable.

The industry needs more environmentally friendly material alternatives, in the manufacture of which ecology has been taken into account both in production processes (environmental footprint) and in the use of renewable raw materials.

Ecological innovations can provide significant added value to healthcare organizations and healthcare companies that manufacture consumer products. The market size of hydrocolloid dressings is estimated to exceed $2.9 billion by 2029. Currently, there are no ecological material solutions available on the market.
